Dental Implants

Dental implants are an effective treatment option to replace missing teeth. They are considered a permanent and long-term solution that closely mimics the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. Dental implants are small, screw-like titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone underneath the gums. They serve as artificial tooth roots, providing a stable anchor for replacement
teeth.

Dental implants consist of three main components:

1. The implant fixture is a small, screw-shaped post made of biocompatible materials, typically titanium. It is surgically placed into the jawbone. The implant fixture fuses with the jawbone and provides a stable and strong foundation for the replacement tooth.

2. The abutment is a connector that is attached to the implant. It projects above the gumline into oral cavity and acts as a support for the final restoration.

3. The dental restoration is the visible part of the dental implant that resembles a natural tooth. Depending on the number of missing teeth and the patient’s specific needs, the
restoration can be a single crown, a bridge, or a denture.

The process of getting dental implants generally involves several steps:

During your first consultation, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, examine the condition of your jawbone, and discuss your treatment goals. They may take dental X-rays or use advanced imaging techniques such as CBCT to assess the bone structure and determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants.

If you are considered a suitable candidate, the implant will be surgically placed into the jawbone. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia; however, the sedation options may be available if needed. The implant is then positioned and left to heal for a period of several weeks to several months. During this phase, the jawbone fuses with the implant.

Once the implant has integrated with the jawbone, a minor procedure is performed to attach the abutment to the implant fixture. The gum tissue is opened, and the abutment is secured in place. In some cases, the abutment may be placed at the same time as the implant fixture during the initial surgery.

After the gums have healed and the abutment is in place, the final restoration is custom- made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth. The restoration is then attached to the abutment, providing a functional and aesthetic replacement for the missing tooth or teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants:

  • Dental implants offer a natural appearance, as they are designed to blend seamlessly with your existing teeth.
  • Dental implants function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and bite with ease and confidence. They provide stability and prevent problems commonly associated with missing teeth, such as difficulty chewing or slurred speech.
  • With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are durable and resistant to decay, unlike natural teeth or other dental restorations.
