Root Canal

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that is performed to save a severely infected or damaged tooth. It involves several steps and is typically carried out over one or two visits to the dentist.

First, you would visit your dentist, who will examine your tooth by cold and heat test and may take X-rays to assess the extent of the problem. If it is determined that your tooth’s dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) is infected or damaged, root canal treatment may be recommended.

Before the procedure begins, the dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure that you are comfortable and do not feel any pain during the treatment. The numbing process involves a small
injection near the affected tooth, which may cause a slight pinch or stinging sensation.

Once the tooth is numb, the dentist will place a small rubber sheet called a dental dam around the tooth. This helps to isolate the tooth, keeping it dry and free from saliva during the procedure. The
dentist will then create a small opening in the top part of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.

Using special dental instruments, the dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged dental pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals. The canals are then cleaned and shaped using small
files to remove any bacteria, debris, or infected tissue.

After cleaning the canals, the dentist will disinfect them using antiseptic solutions to eliminate any remaining bacteria. The canals are then sealed to prevent reinfection. A rubbery material called
gutta-percha is placed into the canals, and a sealer is used to ensure a tight seal.

In some cases, the dentist may place a temporary filling to close the access opening. This temporary filling will protect the tooth until the final restoration is placed.

After the root canal treatment, your tooth may require a permanent restoration, such as a dental crown or filling, to protect and restore its function and appearance. The dentist will discuss the
appropriate restoration option with you based on your specific needs.

While the procedure is commonly associated with discomfort, local anesthesia is used to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible during the treatment. After the procedure, you may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and should subside within a few days.

Root canal treatment is a highly effective way to save a tooth and relieve dental pain caused by infection or damage. It allows you to maintain your natural tooth and restore its normal function, enabling you to bite, chew, and speak comfortably.
